Alistair Burns

I’m pleased that the government has responded to the criticism of their success to date in delivering their dementia strategy. Clearly they have not admitted any short-comings directly, but thank goodness they’ve done something about it even so! Of course this is early days and I have not come across Alistair Burns before, (although we do have some connections with Manchester University – our own Dr Booth being an alumni) but I hope we see more activity than we have thus far. Maybe Gerry Robinson would have been a better choice? That’s probably unfair, but Gerry is a high-profile ‘mover and shaker’ who has proven skills and the passion to boot! There are probably lots of people we’d like to nominate……..but who wants to be in that particular hotseat and have to dance to the governments tune?

  1. Hi Peter,

Great post, some pertinent questions to those of us who understand the positive effect the strategy is capable of for facilitating person centred care. Dementia -centric design strategy has a long way to go to provide dignity and to enable environments to those in the ageing care and recognition of mutual independance to promote autonomy and well-being.

Once moment to moment experience of contentment and value is realised and the knowledgeable experts put their heads together; the goverment can only then begin to interpret and apply appropriate ethical values to a care pathway for people with dementia.

This enhancement of facilities for those caring for our ageing population and support for carers who choose to provide cogniative design and recognition to those involved. The sooner we can make an impact on personalising the care environment the better.

Terry Pratchett would certainly have an interest in this topic I’m sure, Terry’s as aware of emphasising the importance of good communication and supportive relationships as we are.

Look forward to catching up with you soon!

    Thanks Jane Verity-Smart
