Continence Strategy Generates Positive Results

The find continence strategy is centred around using multiple cue concepts to communicate feelings of confidence and independence amongst service users. Moreover we hope to maintain or restore dignity.

The strategy works by using a variety of cues that establish a route to the toilet. For example, a coloured sign which presents a 3D picture of a toilet provides instant recognition of the location. The toilet seat itself is brightly coloured and can be complimented with coloured hand rails which offer guidance and deliver confidence when sitting down. [Shall we also mention anti glare, we offer assistance on heights etc - no]

Care homes who have adopted this strategy are seeing positive results. Darren Kelly is manager of a Bupa Care Home in Paisley, Scotland and says, ‘The signs have contributed to reducing the time spent dealing with incontinence. This puts a positive spin on their workloads and they can enjoy quality time with service users.

the memory boxes are very complimentary...

"Having had a policy of utilizing all manner of beautiful and colourful objects to individualise bedroom doors, we have found the Memory Boxes very complimentary to this

strategy, both in engaging friends and family in bringing in personal effects and also as a recognition aid."
